Assam Flood Response

With recurring floods in Assam affecting more than 17 lakh people across the state, the Government and other relief agencies have been hard at work extending support. Lacs of stranded and dispossessed residents of the state have been relocated to relief camps. Relief operations by Social Activities in Indian Framework started on June 15, with plans being executed on the basis of a situational analysis presented by the ground team.

The team first identified 22 villages in Assam that hadn’t received adequate relief support, and started working towards assisting communities in those villages. As the flood waters started receding, the need rose to meet the immediate food requirements of those staying in relief camps. Responding to this need, the Social Activities in Indian Framework team provided more than 10,000 people immediate relief in the form of ready-to-eat food like biscuits, milk, drinking water and puffed rice.

In addition to this, the team also provided ration kits to 2,500 affected families. Each ration kit consisted of enough rice, wheat flour, sugar and dal to sustain a family of four for duration of 10-15 days. Each family was also provided a blanket.

Volunteers from across the Social Activities in Indian Framework family played a critical role in the operations. As many as 100 volunteers rallied around the Organisation’s Disaster Response team, helping them pack ration kits with remarkable speed. The team on ground used boats and ferries to transport ration kits to the interior locations, reaching the unreached and extending a helping hand in places where it was difficult to reach.
